Day of Saint Valentine, better known as Valentine's Day, is a holiday that is celebrated every year on February 14th. Many people around the world celebrate it, especially young couples. Originally, this holiday was celebrated in the Protestant and Roman Catholic Churches, but apart from the Western ones, this day is also celebrated by the Orthodox Church, but as the day of Saint Tryphon.

They say that love should be expressed every day, but it is nice to mark that one day of the year and remind yourself of the importance of romantic love. After all, love is all around us and breathes in the various things that surround us, so why not celebrate and show it on a special day such as February 14th - Valentine's Day?
Do you know how this holiday came about? If you are one of those who do not know the history of this date, here is an unusual and undoubtedly sad story.

Saint Valentine was a Christian preacher, who in 269 year married Roman soldiers with their beloved wives, despite the fact that it was forbidden and even punishable by death. In order to preserve military morale and provide a stronger war force, Emperor Claudius II promulgated a law forbidding soldiers from marrying, because he believed that married men would rather think about their wives and family than about empire and struggle.

On the other hand, Valentine had an understanding for men who had their loves and wanted to start their own family, and he helped them in various ways. He reconciled quarreling couples, wrote love letters instead, gave flowers to women and most importantly, conducted secret weddings for soldiers.

When Emperor Claudius II found out about it, he ordered the priest to be imprisoned and soon after to be executed. According to legend, while Valentine was still in his cell, the blind daughter of a prison guard fell in love with him. But Valentine, who made a vow of celibacy, couldn’t return her love. However, the day before the execution (February 13th), he wrote her a touching letter, in which he admitted his true feelings. The girl received the letter after the execution, and if this legend is true, the words of love read to her by others led her to cure her blindness. This is how the tradition of writing love letters on February 14th came about.
